Circulation Desk

The Circulation Desk area (also called the Circ Desk) is located just inside the main library doors. At the desk, patrons can pick up, borrow, and return library materials. It houses the Closed Reserve and Audio Visual materials and serves as a general information desk.

Our Circulation Desk is staffed by friendly and knowledgeable personnel who are readily available to assist patrons with all their information needs.

Reference Area

The Marion Campus Library provides a variety of information areas.

The Reference collection includes ready-reference materials, encyclopedias, statistical sources and specialized subject material. These materials are arranged by the Library of Congress classification and cannot be checked out.

Other areas of reference include map cases and the current periodicals display. Atlases are located on both the first and second floors.

Collections

The library collection consist of over 52,000 volumes and more than 250 print periodical titles. Books are shelved by the Library of Congress classification: alphabetically by title. Most books and periodicals can be checked out but circulation periods will varry. The book collection is located on the first floor; the periodical collection is shelved alphabetically by title also on the first floor.

New Books Display

New books are displayed on the first floor and can be checked out. Feel fee to browse them. We add them regularly.

Audio Visual Collections

A Collection of audio visual materials such as videos, slides, filmstrips, CD's, DVD's and audiotapes are also available. These can be located by searching our online catalog. The library can provide space to view/hear these materials.

Special Collections

The library collection includes many different special collections, geared to specific topics and subjects.

Career Resource Center: consists of general books on making career choices, books on specific occupational fields, job hunting, resume preparation, and interviewing.

George H. Reavis Reading Area: a collection of Fastback pamphlets published by Phi Delta Kappa, in the field of education; located in stack Eight.

Casual Reading: Located in the Casual Seating Area on the first floor down from the Copy Room. Nonacademic collection of mostly paperbacks and is primarily for recreational reading. They are not listed in the online catalog but can be read in the library or checked out for three weeks.

Pamphlet Files: located along the west wall, they are organized in subject folders and provides current and quick information on a variety of topics. These can be checked out for three days.

Services

The Library provides a variety of supplemental services to assist patrons in their information needs.

Computer Work Stations- Patrons can access online catalogs, electronic databases, word processing programs; as well as the Internet from 14 workstations located on the first floor and seven more on the second floor.

The Library has a small collection of newspapers and periodicals on microfilm and microfiche. A microfilm/microfiche reader/printer is available to view microfilm. Prints of the viewed film can be made directly from the machine.

A copier room houses two copiers. Copies cost $0.10 per page. Ask library staff for assistance in using these machines.

The Library provides information areas for campus and community events/activities, as well as general information bulletin boards.

The Library offeres a Cite It Right Center which is dedicated to helping students in writing citations for bibliographies. A variety of style guides and general writing manuals are available to use. It is located across from the Circulation Desk.

Study Areas

The Library strives to provide patrons with a variety of quiet study areas including tables, lighted carrels, casual seating areas, and two discussion rooms for group study. These study areas are located throughout the library on both floors.

Special Collections

Newspapers: A small collection of local, national and international titles. Latest issues are shelved on the current periodical displays at the beginning. These do not circulate.

Law: Located in the second floor next to the newspapers, includes a variety of titles: Some are no longer being updated however, many other law recourses are available electronically.

Virginia Garibaldi Allen Children's Literature Collection: Shelved in book stack 66, this collection includes award-winning titles and books for pre-kindergarten thru eighth grade. Books about Children's Literature are shelved in the regular collection.

Harding/Thomas "Age Of Normalcy" Research Collection

This is a collection of materials on two prominent Marionites, Warren G. Harding and Norman M. Thomas, and the period of history in which they were significant. Materials include books, articles, recordings, pictures, written correspondences, and other memorabilia. These materials are restricted and non-circulating. Please ask library staff to access this collection.
